Teeth Grinding ("Bruxing")
Grinding and/or clenching and the trauma that results, can lead to a series of health
problems (jaw pain, tense muscles, headaches, earaches, neck aches, as well as
excessive wear on the teeth). In many cases, teeth grinding (“bruxing”) occurs during
sleep. Clenching can occur at any time of day especially when feeling tense or
experiencing high stress. If Dr. Arroyo notices signs of bruxism damage, he will
discuss treatment options with you, including but not limited to, behavior modification
and an appliance called a night or occlusal guard. A night guard is custom made and
worn at bedtime to absorb the force of biting, clenching, and grinding. This appliance
(when worn properly) prevents future damage to the teeth.
Snoring
The muscles and soft tissues in the throat and mouth relax while one sleeps. As the air
flows more quickly through the smaller airway, the soft tissues in the mouth and throat
vibrate and a person starts to snore. Even though surgery is recommended for severe
cases, for the majority of snorers, the most affordable, non-invasive and effective solution
is a snoring prevention device. The appliance increases the airway space at the back of
the throat by repositioning the lower jaw. This stops the soft tissues from vibrating and
stops the snoring.
